Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD, commissioned Ethiopian artist and Sioux Falls resident, Eyob Mergia, to represent artistically the seven days of creation depicted in the book of Genesis. Eyob conceptualized and painted these 8 panels on a small scale which then needed to be installed on a grand scale in the form of a tile mosaic. Each tile measured 1″ x 1″ and so there was great opportunity to represent every nuance of color and detail intended by Mergia in his original paintings. The task entrusted to us was to graphically communicate between the artist, the tile company, and the church. We worked directly with the artist to choose from hundreds of colors of tiles, in order to ensure that the final installed mosaic was accurately depicted.
